Spanish Grammar: the “Pasado Imperfecto” PART II
If you are a student of Spanish in Buenos Aires or in other country and want to know when to use the “imperfect”past tense in Spanish this blog will help you!
In our previous blog, we had learnt that the “Imperfecto” past tense is used to make descriptions in the past. We can talk about how someone was like, or how places were like. Things and people in general can be described in a past context by using the “imperfect”.
Before continue, let´s see how is the conjugation.
If you are studying Spanish language, you must know that there are many irregular verbs. However, we have good news for you: the imperfect past tense has only 3 irregular verbs! The rest are all regular verbs.
Let´s see how is the ending of regular “AR” ending verbs, for example, the verb “AMAR”
Yo amaba
Tú amabas
Usted amaba
Él amaba, ella amaba
Nosotros amábamos, nosotras amábamos
Ustedes amaban
Ellos amaban, ellos amaban
Examples:
“Cuando yo era niño amaba a mis mascotas.”
“Ella amaba ir al cine con sus amigas.”
“Mis abuelos nos amaban mucho.”
“¿Por qué Romeo amaba tanto a Julieta?”
Let´s see how is the ending of regular “ER” ending verbs, for example, the verb “COMER”
Yo comía
Tú comías
Usted comía
Él comía, ella comía
Nosotros comíamos, nosotras comíamos
Ustedes comían
Ellos comían, ellas comían
Some examples:
“Cuando yo era niño comía muchos caramelos.”
“¿Qué comías cuando vivías en Italia?”
“Claudia comía en el restaurante Fígaro todos los viernes.”
Let´s see how is the ending of regular “IR” ending verbs, for example, the verb “VIVIR”:
Yo vivía
Tú vivías
Usted vivía
Él vivía, ella vivía
Nosotros vivíamos, nosotras vivíamos
Ustedes vivían
Ellos vivían, ellas vivían
“Cuando yo era niño vivía con mis padres”
“Vivíamos en una hermosa casa en el campo.”
“Mis abuelos vivían cerca de la montaña.”
The 3 irregular verbs are: “ser” (to be), “ir” (to go) and “ver” (to see)
Verbo SER:
Yo era
Tú eras
Él era, ella era
Usted era
Nosotros éramos, nostras éramos
Ustedes eran
Ellos eran, ellas eran
“Romeo era muy romántico.”
“Era muy interesante escuchar las historias de mi abuela.”
“¿Cómo era tu padre?”
“Mi padre es un hombre muy serio, pero cuando era niño era muy travieso.”
Verbo IR:
Yo iba
Tú ibas
Él iba, ella iba
Usted iba
Nosotros íbamos, nosotras íbamos
Ustedes iban
Ellos iban, ellas iban
“Cuando yo era niño iba a la escuela en bicicleta.”
“En la época de Navidad mi hermanos y yo siempre íbamos a la misa de Nochebuena.”
“Cuando vivía en Italia comía pastas muy a menudo.”
Verbo VER
Yo veía
Tú veías
Él veía, ella veía
Usted veía
Nosotros veíamos, nosotras veíamos
Ustedes veían
Ellos veían, ellas veían
