Hola 🙂 ! Today we are going to learn how to conjugate verbs in Spanish. Let´s start!!!
- Spanish regular verbs ending in “-AR”:
Spanish regular verbs are divided into 3 groups depending on their endings:
- The “-ar” ending verbs, like “hablar“ (to speak)
- The “-er” ending verbs like “comer“ (to eat)
- The “-ir” ending verbs, like “vivir“ (to live)
- HOW TO CONJUGATE SPANISH VERBS?
As in many other languages, when you want to conjugate a verb, you have to add the “AR endings” to the base “root” of the verb.
- WHAT IS THE ROOT OF A VERB?
We obtain the root of a verb by removing the “ar” last part from the infinitive form. To show you what I mean, we can see the verb “hablar”, which means “to speak” , and which root would be “habl“.
- WHAT IS THE “ENDING” OF A VERB?
As in many languages, also in Spanish there is an ending for each verb tense and for each personal pronoun (grammatical person). The ending will tell you the tense (present, future, past) and the person (I, you, they, etc.) of the conjugated verb.
- HOW DO WE CONJUGATE A SPANISH VERB IN THE “PRESENT TENSE”?
Each verb tense has a specific ending for each personal pronoun. We have to add these endings to the base root of the verb.

Personal pronouns Ending for each pronoun Root + ending = Conjugated verb
Yo o Habl + o hablo Tú as Habl + as hablas Vos ás Habl + ás hablás él a Habl + a habla nosotros amos Habl + amos hablamos ustedes as Habl + as hablan vosotros áis Habl + áis habláis ellos as Habl + as hablan
PRESENTE del verbo HABLAR (Present tense of verb “HABLAR”)
Yo hablo (I speak)
Tú hablas (you speak)
Vos hablas (you speak)
Él, ella habla (he, she speaks)
Nosotros hablamos (we speak)
Vosotros habláis (you speak)
Ustedes, ellos hablan (you, they speak)

¿Ustedes hablan francés? (Do you speak French?)
No. Nosotros no hablamos francés. (We don´t speak French)
